WMHS, broadcasting at 88.1 FM since 1998, is Thomas McKean High School's student-run radio station.

In 2002, the students ran a market survey and determined that the Wilmington, Delaware, area had plenty of radio stations in all formats but one: "Music of the '50s through the '80s." Since then, WMHS's primary format has been a mixture of classic rock'n'roll, news, sports, weather, and community programming. This year's radio students are re-examining the market and may decide to change the format after they examine the demographics of our listening area.

Each year, between 70 and 100 Students receive academic credit for learning how a radio station operates. Acting under the supervision of Mr. Fran Kulas, students act as

  • DJs
  • production staff
  • newscasters
  • sportscasters
  • promotion staff
  • sales staff
  • engineers
  • announcers
  • editors and writers.
The Radio Broadcasting program is one of the Career Pathways choices offered to McKean students. By selecting the three-year Radio Broadcasting Career Pathway, McKean students gain practical experience in all aspects of running a radio station and learn how some of the skills learned in other classes may have immediate practical applications.

For more information, contact Mr. Kulas via e-mail or call him at Thomas McKean High School.
